Men's golfer qualifies for the NJCAA National Tournament.
The streak continues.
The Bryant and Stratton men's golf program is in it's fourth year of existence and it has qualified a golfer for the national tournament each season. This year, Caden Fletcher will represent the Bobcats as one of six golfers who qualified as an individual at the Region IX championship played at Prairie View golf course in Byron, IL.
Fletcher shot a three-round 236 to qualify the NJCAA national tournament, that will be held in Joplin, MO this May. The team will compete in a number of spring tournaments prior to the national tournament allowing Fletcher to ramp back up before nationals. Head Coach Andy Runkel is very happy for Fletcher but is also eyeing more for his program.
"I am extremely proud of this accomplishment. It is huge for the program and the college to have success at the National level in such a short period of time," Rukel said. "With that being said, individual national qualifiers are the secondary goal. My goal is to have our team qualify."
As a team, the Bobcats finished in seventh place but only eight strokes behind the final team qualifier.
Runkel is not surprised by Fletcher's performance as he saw it in him from the moment he first met him.
"When I met Caden in February, I knew I wanted him on the team," Runkel said. "He was a hard-nosed kid who is a grinder. He is mentally tough and that is what you need to compete at a high level in any sport. Plus he has a very steady game off the tee and makes a lot putts."
Fletcher came to Bryant and Stratton from Tampa, Florida leaving a warm-weather climate for Wisconsin. Runkel credits the school's association with "The Bog" golf course as a big reason he is able to recruit nationally to Bryant and Stratton.
"I have opened up my recruiting nationwide the past couple years and have noticed a lot of interest," he said. "Part of the reason a kid would come to BSC is our relationship w/ The Bog golf course. The Bog is a top-ten course in Wisconsin. The kids know they will get better and have a chance to continue their college careers playing elsewhere after they are done at BSC. We might not be able to play outside during the winter months but having access to an indoor practice area keeps the team prepared year-round."
While Fletcher has proven he can compete with the best in Region IX, Runkel believes he will also thrive at the national tournament.
"Caden has the talent and game to compete at the next level. His tough demeanor will prove to be an asset as he tees it up in May of 2020 at the NJCAA Championship."
Fletcher also was named a first-team all-region golfer in addition to his fourth-place overall finish at the regional event.
